Fair Trade Leather Lion Money Box

This brightly coloured, lion shaped, fair trade money box has been carefully handmade by a small family firm in Calcutta.

Made from leather, the front, back and sides of the money box have all been dyed and then embossed with the detailing of a lion. The slit for the coins is on the lions head and on one side at the bottom is a press stud opening which allows you to remove the saved coins.

Standing 18cm x 14cm and 4cm deep this money box would make an enjoyable gift and would look great standing on any child's shelf.

The importer of this fair trade money box is a member of BAFTS and has been trading fairly for over ten years. They buy fair traded products from India, Indonesia, Nepal and Thailand. Most products are purchased directly from the primary producers. In India they will purchase from larger companies who provide benefits for their workers such as free healthcare and free education. One of their suppliers provide funding for two schools in Rajasthan. One supplier in Nepal supports an orphanage and he gives his workers work clothes and holiday pay.

In Indonesia and Thailand where they only deal with the primary producer the supplier may provide advance payments for them to purchase materials and other necessities. All workers are paid a fair price for each product which is above the national average and men and women are paid the same rate.
